Venting a clothes dryer through the roof is allowed when the exhaust system is properly designed and installed. In some homes and multifamily buildings, a roof termination can actually provide a more direct route to the exterior than trying to reach a distant side wall.
The important point is that the dryer must still exhaust completely outdoors through a termination designed for dryer exhaust. Current IRC requirements call for a backdraft damper at the termination, prohibit screens, and require the terminal passageway to remain undiminished with at least 12.5 square inches of open area.
Roof venting can work very well, but it also introduces considerations involving duct length, roof access, cleaning, weather exposure, and the type of roof termination being used.
Is It Code-Compliant to Vent a Dryer Through the Roof?
Yes. The International Residential Code does not prohibit a clothes dryer from terminating through the roof. It requires the dryer exhaust to terminate outside the building and to follow the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions. The termination must include a backdraft damper, and a screen cannot be installed over the outlet.
The exhaust also cannot simply discharge into an attic, soffit, ridge vent, or crawl space. It must continue all the way to an approved exterior termination.
A roof termination therefore needs to function as part of the dryer exhaust system—not merely as a generic roof cap. Pros of Venting a Dryer Through the Roof
A roof route can sometimes shorten the exhaust path. In homes or multifamily buildings where the dryer is located away from an exterior wall, going vertically to the roof can be more direct than routing a long horizontal duct to the side of the building. It can work well for interior laundry rooms. A roof termination gives designers and installers another option when the laundry room is located near the center of the building and a wall termination would require a complicated route.

Cons of Venting a Dryer Through the Roof
Roof venting can be a good solution, but it is not automatically the best choice for every installation.
Cleaning access can be more difficult. A wall termination at ground level is generally easier to inspect and clean than a vent located on the roof. Roof access may require additional safety precautions or professional service.
Vertical runs still count toward duct length. Venting straight up does not eliminate duct-length requirements. Under the 2024 IRC specified-length method, the maximum dryer exhaust duct length is 35 feet, and fittings reduce the allowable length according to their equivalent-length values unless the dryer manufacturer’s instructions provide an approved alternative.
Roof penetrations must be flashed correctly. Any roof termination has to be properly integrated with the roofing system to prevent water intrusion.
The termination must remain accessible for maintenance. Lint, debris, or pest activity can create restrictions over time, so the vent should be inspected and cleaned as needed.
How Long Can a Dryer Vent Run to the Roof?
There is no special extra allowance simply because the dryer vents through the roof. The entire exhaust route still has to comply with the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions and applicable code requirements.
Under the 2024 IRC specified-length method, the maximum exhaust duct length is 35 feet from the dryer’s transition-duct connection to the exterior termination. Elbows reduce that allowable length because they add resistance. For example, a standard 4-inch-radius 90-degree mitered elbow counts as 5 feet of equivalent duct length under the IRC table.
The code also allows the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions to determine the permitted duct size and maximum length. Because dryers vary, the manufacturer’s instructions should always be checked when designing the exhaust route.
A roof route can therefore be beneficial when it produces a shorter and simpler total duct path than routing to a distant exterior wall.

What Type of Roof Vent Should Be Used for a Dryer?
A dryer should terminate through a roof vent designed specifically for clothes-dryer exhaust rather than a general-purpose roof cap. The termination should provide an unrestricted exhaust opening, include a backdraft damper, allow lint to pass freely, and remain accessible for inspection and cleaning.
A screen should not be installed over the dryer exhaust outlet because lint can collect on the screen and restrict airflow.

Is a Roof Vent Better Than a Wall Vent for a Dryer?
Not necessarily. The best termination location is usually the one that creates the shortest, simplest practical exhaust route while meeting the dryer manufacturer’s instructions and applicable code requirements.
When the dryer is located near an exterior wall, a wall termination can often provide easier cleaning access and a very short duct run. When the laundry room is located farther inside the building, a roof termination may provide a more direct route than running a long horizontal duct to an exterior wall.
The decision should be based on the entire exhaust-system layout rather than choosing a roof or wall termination solely for appearance.

How Do You Maintain a Dryer Roof Vent?
Dryer exhaust systems should be inspected periodically for lint buildup, damaged ductwork, restricted airflow, or problems at the exterior termination. A roof vent adds another maintenance consideration because accessing the termination may require safely reaching the roof.
The roof termination should remain free of lint, roofing debris, nests, and other obstructions. The damper should also open freely when the dryer is operating and close when the dryer is off.
If the vent or duct cannot be inspected safely, a qualified dryer-vent cleaning or roofing professional should perform the work.
Should You Vent Your Dryer Through the Roof?
Venting a dryer through the roof can be a good solution when it creates a shorter, more direct exhaust path or when the laundry room is located too far from an exterior wall for a practical wall termination.
The key is to treat the roof vent as part of the entire dryer exhaust system. Duct length, elbows, airflow resistance, cleaning access, roof flashing, and the type of termination all matter.
