What Is a Dryer Transition Duct?

The short duct that connects the back of a clothes dryer to the permanent dryer exhaust system is commonly called a dryer transition duct, dryer vent hose, or dryer connector.

Current IRC requirements state that transition ducts connecting the dryer to the permanent exhaust system must be listed and labeled to UL 2158A, limited to a single length, no more than 8 feet long, and not concealed inside walls or other construction.

That means the decision should not be based only on which hose is easiest to bend or cheapest to buy.

Thin Foil-Style Dryer Duct

Lightweight foil-style duct is flexible and easy to position, but thin materials can be more vulnerable to crushing, tearing, punctures, and sharp bends behind the dryer.

If the duct collapses when the appliance is pushed back, the effective airflow area can become much smaller.

Semi-Rigid Metal Duct

Semi-rigid metal transition duct can provide a firmer airflow path than very light flexible materials, but it can still become permanently crushed or kinked if the dryer is pushed too close to the wall.

The permanent dryer exhaust duct inside the building should be constructed from materials and installed in accordance with the applicable code and dryer manufacturer instructions.

That distinction is important:

DryerFlex → exposed transition connection behind the dryer

Permanent dryer exhaust duct → concealed or routed through the building as permitted by code

Using transition duct inside a wall can create inspection, cleaning, and durability problems and is not what the product is designed for.

Can You Connect Two Pieces of DryerFlex Together?

A dryer transition duct should generally be installed as one continuous length from the dryer outlet to the permanent exhaust connection.

Splicing multiple pieces together can create additional joints, potential lint-catching points, and unnecessary restriction. It can also conflict with the listing and installation requirements for the transition duct.

If the existing connection requires more than one piece, the better solution is usually to revise the layout so one properly sized transition duct can make the connection.
